How to Find and Cancel Unused Subscriptions

The average person spends more on subscriptions than they realize. Studies suggest most people underestimate their monthly subscription costs by 2–3x. Here’s how to find and cancel the ones you don’t need.

Step 1: Pull Your Statements

Look at the last 90 days of bank and credit card statements. Highlight every recurring charge.

Step 2: Categorize Each Subscription

Group them into categories: streaming, software, memberships, services, apps. This makes it easier to spot overlap.

Step 3: Ask Three Questions

For each subscription, ask: When did I last use this? Would I sign up for this today? Is there a free alternative?

Step 4: Cancel Immediately

Don’t wait. If the answer to any of those questions raises doubt, cancel it now. You can always re-subscribe later.

Step 5: Set a Quarterly Review

Subscriptions creep back. Set a calendar reminder every 3 months to repeat this process.

How Much Can You Save?

Most people find $50–$200 per month in unused or underused subscriptions. That’s $600–$2,400 per year.
